These three students from DIS recently showcased their debating prowess at the prestigious African Open Debate Competition. Asteria, Tariq, and Kai embarked on a journey of intellectual challenge and spirited discourse, representing their school with pride.
The competition spanned five intense rounds, testing the participants' ability to articulate arguments, counterpoints, and critical thinking skills. Despite the stiff competition, Asteria, Tariq, and Kai demonstrated resilience and determination, securing victory in three of the five rounds.
One of the unique aspects of the competition was the inclusion of impromptu rounds, where participants had to think on their feet and respond to unexpected topics. In these rounds, the students showcased their adaptability and quick thinking, although they were left in suspense regarding their grades and standings.
Despite their best efforts, the trio's journey came to an end before the quarterfinals. Out of 72 teams competing, only six advanced to the next stage, highlighting the fierce competition and high standards of the event. While disappointed, Asteria, Tariq, and Kai emerged from the experience with invaluable lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and the art of persuasive communication.
Their participation in the African Open Debate Competition not only showcased their academic abilities but also served as a testament to the rigorous education and supportive community fostered at DIS. As they reflect on their journey, Asteria, Tariq, and Kai can take pride in their achievements and the friendships forged along the way.
While they may not have reached the pinnacle of the competition, their dedication and passion for debate have undoubtedly left a lasting impression. As they return to DIS, they carry with them the experience and knowledge gained from their participation in one of Africa's premier debating events.
