The business trip for the 2024 year 12 and year 13 (Form 5&6) students was an unforgettable adventure that kicked off on February 23, 2024. Our journey took us to fascinating places like the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange Market (DSE) at NHC and the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC).
At NHC, we were warmly welcomed by the DSE workers, Korigwa and Benigna, who gave us a comprehensive lesson on the workings of the stock exchange. We delved into the history of DSE, learning that it was established in 1996, with Oxygen Limited being the first company privatized in Tanzania. We discovered the different products traded on DSE, including bonds and shares.
But that's not all! We also learned valuable lessons on how to grow our money over time, discussing concepts like future cash flow and asset appreciation. Exploring various investment vehicles such as stocks, bonds, real estate, and commodities opened our eyes to the possibilities of wealth creation. Delving deeper into stocks, we uncovered the types of stocks to invest in, how they operate, and the prerequisites for acquiring them. Bonds were also on the agenda, as we explored the different types and the requirements for bond ownership. The knowledge gained at DSE was invaluable, equipping us with insights that will undoubtedly shape our future careers and contribute to the economic growth of Tanzania. After an enlightening session at DSE, we took a break at the nearby KFC for a quick lunch, fueling up for our next adventure at the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC).
Following the long morning to mid-afternoon refreshing lunch break at KFC, the group headed to the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), which is located in Golden Jubilee Tower where the Form 5 and 6 students received a lecture about the institution by TIC management.
The team emphasised that TIC is basically a link between national and foreign investors and all public institutions in Tanzania. They provided an explanation of why investors thought Tanzania was a worthwhile country to invest in, highlighting the country's favourable political and economic environments as well as its low inflation rate and abundance of natural resources, which include rare minerals and stunning tourist destinations that are the mainstays in our nation. Moreover the TIC management team illustrated the ornate details of these aspects and the types of investors that invest in Tanzania.
As the lecture concluded, students developed a new layer of understanding and appreciation of investor relations our home country has fostered. As well how far the country has achieved economically by attracting investors from all parts of the world from India, China, Kenya, the U.K. and U.S.
Fundamentally, the business trip to DSE and TIC became a learning point for the students that attended to maintain a business oriented mind. By finding opportunities from your environment, making good judgments of them by weighing the benefits and risks of them and seizing the moment before it's too late.
